RE Voices - June 2026

June 2026

It’s June!  The month of weddings, graduations, Father’s Day, Flower Communion, annual meetings, PRIDE, and (for our monthly theme) peace.  If you had told me three years ago that some of those things would become controversial in the not too distant future,  I would not have believed you.  But here we are.  The country feels less peaceful and more contentious than I can ever remember. (I was not old enough in the early 70s to remember the protests surrounding the Vietnam War, although I know they were going on around me.) And the courts seem to be on a path to actively walk back all the hard-won rights of our LGBTQ+ sisters and brothers.  And possibly also those of women--I’ve never heard so many people (men) stand up and advocate that giving women the vote was a mistake.

We hope that June here at UUSGU will seem much more peaceful than the world around us.  We do have an event-packed three weeks before we all head out for the summer.

  • June 7th will be our annual congregational meeting.  I believe the warrant will be going out at the same time as this newsletter.  During the adults’ meeting upstairs, the children will be having their own meeting downstairs where we will talk about what things we loved, liked, or didn’t like about RE this year.  We want to get feedback from the students as we plan for next year’s curriculum.  Then, join us again around 4:30 to play games and enjoy a light supper!  We’re inviting the whole congregation to join us this time.

  • June 14th will be our annual Flower Communion celebration.  We’ve invited our scholarship recipients to join us to receive their scholarships and there will be handbells and a choir piece we’ve been working on for months.  The children will be asked to lead the procession with flowers at the beginning of the service as usual.

  • Last, but not least, our June 21st service will feature stories, songs, and activities suggested by the children of the RE program.  We’ll be singing, sharing, listening, learning and doing--all the aspects of worship as we discovered them in our EPIC curriculum this year.  Then, join the congregation afterwards for our annual end of year potluck/picnic.

Last Sunday at UUSGU

Unfortunately, our Sunday Funday at the park was rained out!  So I guess it was fortunate we did not have a lot of children to disappoint.  We will try again next year to offer this fun RE experience on Memorial Day Weekend.

This Week in RE

This is a Spirit Play week for us downstairs in the RE space, AND also we will be practicing some of the elements for the June 21st service.  If you have not told me yet whether your family is planning to attend services on June 21st please do so as soon as possible.  The children have picked a lot of fun activities, choosing not only things that we have done here at UUSGU in the past but also things that they enjoy doing in school and scouts.  I hope that everyone comes to see what the children have selected.

First Sunday in June!

Join us for Game Night for Everyone!  Yes, everyone!  4:30 p.m. until at least 6:30.  I’ll set out dinner at 5:15-ish--on this month's menu is a cold cut and cheese platter for DIY sandwiches and wraps.  There will be gluten free bread and wraps available, and if you would like vegan cheese, just let me know on your RSVP. (The meats and cheeses will be plated separately.)

Summer Vacation

June 7th is our last day of Religious Exploration for the program year as the last two services are multi-gens.  We’ll be sending home projects that have been kept in the classroom after this class -- mailboxes and birdhouses.  Also, if your child has an art project on the bulletin board in the Fellowship Hall that they would like to keep, please take it home with you.  I’ll be clearing off the bulletin board over the summer to prepare it for next program year.  In addition, we have a number of art pieces that were made by families during the online COVID RE program that have been adorning our hallways for the past four years.  As much as we love them, we need to make room for new projects, so if there is anything you want to keep, please pick it up.  We’ll bring them upstairs on June 7th and have them in a box near the RE bulletin board.

And Few Things to Look Forward To Next Year!

  • Kid’s Pick Sundays -- once a month the Time for All Ages will feature a book/story selected by one of our RE children

  • BUUilding Our New Way -- one room classroom Sundays will be based on the UUSGU building theme

  • Second Sunday Drop-In -- every other month story, craft, and game sessions open to the public for families with children pre-school and lower elementary age.
